Google Chat rolling out automated translations for Workspace

Google Chat is getting a highly-requested function with automated translations, whereas a handful of tweaks are coming to @mentions.

Google Chat is rolling out the power to “routinely detect and translate over 120 languages to a person’s most well-liked language.” Messages in one other language can be translated by default with the power to “View unique.” That includes the Google Translate icon, Chat notes the unique language inline.

Out there on the internet, Android, and iOS, go to Settings > Computerized Translation > “Translate messages to your most well-liked language” to allow. Different issues to notice embrace:

  • “Computerized translation solely applies to message content material contained in the dialog stream and doesn’t present up on message snippets in Dwelling or notifications.”
  • “These translated messages are viewable solely to you.”
  • “Please enable as much as 24 hours for this function to replace languages when languages are modified in your Google account settings.”

Translated messages are solely viewable to you, whereas “Computerized translation solely applies to message content material contained in the dialog stream and doesn’t present up on message snippets in Dwelling or notifications.”

First previewed in April, Google Chat translations are rolling out over the approaching weeks to Workspace clients with these paid add-ons:

  • Gemini Enterprise and Enterprise
  • AI Conferences and Messaging

In the meantime, Google Chat is making some updates to @mentions, beginning with a brand new design that takes after good chips, like Drive’s, for a extra uniform look throughout Workspace apps. Google says “simplified colours” will end in private mentions standing out essentially the most.

Hovering over a chip “will present extra details about the particular person” and clicking will begin a 1:1 dialog. Lastly, mentioning a person that isn’t within the dialog will provide you with the choice to “add them and ship the message, or simply ship the message with out including them.” This solely applies to Areas and group conversations, not 1:1 direct messages.

These adjustments — for all Google Workspace clients, Workspace Particular person Subscribers, and customers with private Google accounts — are rolling out first on the internet, and coming later (Q1 2025) to Android and iOS.
